O Christmas Tree Lyrics

"O Christmas Tree" (originally "O Tannenbaum" in German) is one of the most recognizable Christmas carols in the world. This beloved song celebrates the evergreen fir tree as a symbol of constancy and faithfulness, qualities that have made it a cherished part of Christmas celebrations for nearly two centuries. Its simple yet profound lyrics remind us of the enduring beauty and hope that the Christmas season brings.

O Christmas Tree, O Christmas tree, How lovely are your branches! O Christmas Tree, O Christmas tree, How lovely are your branches! Not only green in summer's heat, But also winter's snow and sleet. O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree, How lovely are your branches! O Christmas Tree, O Christmas tree, Of all the trees most lovely; O Christmas Tree, O Christmas tree, Of all the trees most lovely. Each year you bring to us delight With brightly shining Christmas light! O Christmas Tree, O Christmas tree, Of all the trees most lovely. O Christmas Tree, O Christmas tree, We learn from all your beauty; O Christmas Tree, O Christmas tree, We learn from all your beauty. Your bright green leaves with festive cheer, Give hope and strength throughout the year. O Christmas Tree, O Christmas tree, We learn from all your beauty.

History and Background

The origins of "O Tannenbaum" trace back to 16th-century Silesia (now part of Poland and the Czech Republic), where folk songs praising the evergreen fir tree were already popular. The earliest known version of the melody appeared in a 1799 songbook, but the lyrics we sing today were largely shaped by two German writers in the 19th century.

In 1819, Joachim August Zarnack wrote the first verse about the fir tree's faithfulness. His original poem was actually a melancholic love song comparing a faithful evergreen to an unfaithful lover. In 1824, Leipzig organist and teacher Ernst Anschütz revised the song, adding new verses that transformed it from a love lament into the joyful Christmas carol we know today.

The song's popularity spread rapidly throughout German-speaking regions and eventually across the world as German immigrants brought their Christmas traditions to new lands. The English translation "O Christmas Tree" became widely popular in the United States and Britain during the Victorian era, when the Christmas tree itself was becoming an essential part of holiday celebrations.

Interestingly, the melody of "O Tannenbaum" has been borrowed for numerous other songs, including several American state songs such as Maryland's "Maryland, My Maryland," Michigan's unofficial anthem, and even college fight songs. The tune's simple, memorable quality has made it one of the most adapted melodies in Western music.

Meaning and Symbolism

At its heart, "O Christmas Tree" celebrates the evergreen as a symbol of steadfastness and eternal life. Unlike deciduous trees that lose their leaves in autumn, the fir tree remains green throughout the year—through summer's heat and winter's cold alike. This constancy made it a powerful symbol long before it became associated with Christmas.

In Christian tradition, the evergreen came to represent eternal life and God's everlasting love. The triangular shape of the fir tree was seen as pointing toward heaven, and its green color symbolized hope and renewal even in the darkest days of winter.

Each verse of the song highlights different aspects of the tree's significance: the first celebrates its enduring beauty, the second praises the joy it brings at Christmas time, and the third emphasizes the hope and strength we can draw from its example throughout the year.

Memorizing O Christmas Tree

"O Christmas Tree" is one of the easier Christmas carols to memorize thanks to its repetitive structure. Each of the three verses follows the same pattern, making it ideal for learning:

  1. Verse 1: Celebrates the tree's lovely branches that stay green through all seasons
  2. Verse 2: Praises the tree as the loveliest of all, bringing delight with its Christmas lights
  3. Verse 3: Reflects on learning from the tree's beauty, finding hope and strength in its festive presence

Notice that each verse begins and ends with "O Christmas Tree, O Christmas tree" followed by the verse's unique theme (branches, loveliness, beauty). The middle couplet of each verse contains the specific imagery or message. This consistent structure makes it easy to remember once you learn the pattern.
